I am just returning from Istanbul, where I had the opportunity to learn from Turkish author Elif Safak. In addition to writing, Elif teaches in London and in both instances benefits from an astonishing ability to tell stories. One vignette she shared that stuck with me is of a young girl in school, who was beginning a painting. The teacher looked at the canvas and asked what she was portraying. The girl answered that she was painting a picture of god. Pausing, the teacher remarked that nobody knows what god looks like. The girl, without missing a beat, replied: “They will in a minute!”
